Casting Models for NYFW SS19 by Brent Chua

New York Fashion Week’s casting was the most racially diverse it has ever been, thanks to Brent Chua.

Over three days, New York Fashion Week: Men’s featured 20 runway shows and presentations produced by the CFDA.

Industria Studios and Cadillac House, the official venues for the July 2018 season.

When it comes to pick the right guy to walk for 20 runway shows is hard to make decisions like this.

But photographer and Casting savvy Brent Chua does it right.

Hispanic guys was a majority, following of black models and then asians coming along to play.

The agencies increased a full diversity on their boards. RED Models, NEXT Models, New York Models, IMG, Major Models with the most variety of models.

For comparison, the Spring 2015 season, when The Fashion Spot first began tracking runway diversity, was only 20.9 percent nonwhite.

HEROES Models, St. Claire Models, Q Models, One Models and Bri’Geid its like the pepper that we need in our food, coming with so interest new faces like Evan Left from Q Models.

Agencies like DNA Models, Wilhelmina Models and Soul Artist Management still on top to participate on NYFW.

Thankfully, it seems the days of New York brands featuring zero nonwhite models are behind us. (All of the Fall 2018 shows we examined included at least one model of color and the vast majority had two or more.)

And yet, with so many of the week’s alternative castings concentrated within a relatively small number of shows, there was a question of whether the industry was actually transforming or whether a few progressive designers were carrying their peers.

Whether the castings were a precursor to even greater strides or if designers were just taking “diversity” to mean “Insta-bait.”

More designers need to get on board and share the happy burden of progress.

  1. I admire Brent Chua and his casting process. I heard that he has such passion that is very contagious and of course a very talented photographer as well! I love that he is not on a lot of social media (instagram) and he lets his work speaks for himself. Giving us what goes on behind the scene and stepping back (of the limelight) to give models their time to shine! He is one of my idols!

  2. Brent Chua is a true GEM!
Thank you very much for this article.
You can really tell that the models and industry people really enjoys and respect him. It clearly shows in his work.
I had a chance to meet him in person at a New York Fashion Week show that he is casting for and I was truly surprised (in a very good way) of how he behaves – VERY REAL and NOT PRETENTIOUS!
So refreshing specially for this industry!

Wishing him all the success he deserves!

  3. Truly a Master at his craft. I’d put him in the ranks of one of the best in the Industry. I’ve been following Brent Chua’s tumblr Blog for years. He has his subtle nuances that give him away, but the photography is a work of Art. He doesn’t skimp on detail he model choices for each project are career making. To be photographed by Brent is your foot in the door for any new and aspiring male or female model. His exquisite locations capture the story he wants to share and once you’ve seen the end result you want more like a drug he’s got you hooked.
