Let’s read this exclusive interview with Joan:

How was your experience working with Alex Bueno?

As always very funny, Alex is just as crazy as me, and we love to get together and try to see what comes up.

This session was not prepared at all (actually I usually prepare very little…) we stayed one morning, rented a car and went to a park in the city of Madrid.

Making the pictures we were passing by people cycling every minute … hehe.

What was your inspiration to go into the forest with Alex?

We had several study sessions and we both wanted to change a bit. This was the outdoor option closest to Madrid, where everyone goes to exercise.

After that, it is already allowing us to take both. I like that everything comes up naturally, in this sense I do not like for example to ask my models to undress.

If they are comfortable and they want it, they will tell me, they already know what kind of photography I do.

Joan is a punky photographer

What are your next projects?

I never know what I’m going to do next session. I’m the most punky photographer you can meet.

I’m obsessed that everything has to be as organic as possible, and that only happens when I’m alone with the boy or girl.

So I usually collect several ideas and I finish deciding in the same study. Yes, I always go with several ideas …just in case.

For you Joan, what is the Human Male Form?

It’s beauty, strength, sensuality, light, sweat, darkness, attraction… It is everything… That’s why I decided to dedicate to look every day in my life. I can’t feel more lucky and happier in my work.

What advice can you give to the guys who want to work with you?

Not because guys has good abs I’m going to run to ask him to take pictures.

“The best model is the one that stops worrying about how his body will come out and relaxes and enjoys the work.”

What has been your worst experience in photography?

I have never talked about this, but surely my worst experience was when I fought with ES Collection and Addicted.

I started with the brand almost since its inception and I became very involved and after many years I think we managed to break out and do something totally amazing underwear.

But one day my partner then had a great conflict with the management of the brands and I got in the middle to defend it and in the end I decided not to work with them again.

The truth is that I was very sad, because they were working together for many years and in reality nothing happened to me… but that’s the way life is…

What has been your best experience in photography?

“Every time I have someone in front of my goal and suddenly I am aware that he is going to let go and that we are going to create “together” I feel the happiest person in the universe.”

You can not imagine how beautiful and special it can be.

Also, right now I am involved in projects with brands that are relying heavily on me as a long-term project, especially Modus Vivendi and Code22, and that makes me feel very excited.

My life is to shoot photos.

You say you’re very punky, how is working with Joan Crisol? Campaigns like Modus Vivendi, ES Collection that you have done, have been the best that those brands can have, how was your experience?

Working for companies that are so big and that trust you so much is the best! Let’s see … I’ve been around for many years, I’ve been working in professional photography for almost 19 years, and it’s true that every day you learn something new.

Actually this punk feeling is the evolution of the security that I have in myself. It’s the good thing about having already screwed up everything in life, I can afford the luxury of knowing that you

DO NOT have to do it and enjoy it in a more organic way. Being a punk is really letting go without fear.

Apart from this, I think that it is very good and healthy that even in large productions, our heads go a little and we let ourselves go, that is, let’s not fool ourselves, always taking into account the final value of the photo.

By the way, leaving aside what I just said, I’m going to continue shitting for many years, is part of the grace of this office. Learning from the good and the bad. I’m more human than anyone.

Who inspires Joan Crisol? Is there a book, movie, artist, actor, character that makes you vibrate with pleasure when you see his artistic work?

I am an absolute consumer of all kinds of art. In photography my gods are Steven Meisel, Richar Avedon and Cecil Beaton.

I’m obsessed with street art: Banksy, Kaws, Hirts, Murakami, Pejac. My favorite comic artist, which I think we eat visually everywhere, is Moebius, and I owe my existential vision to AKIRA of Otomo. I’m a little Otaku and a little freak… hehe.

Joan, what do you think about copying your work? I do NOT mention “photographers” but you know that it is very very common for your work to be copied. Some who feel very offended, others who do not care, others who love you and how you feel about it.

Yes, I copied a few…hehe… there are times that bothers a little, because I know photographers who have offered themselves for free to my models and they have searched and they have shot them in the same studio and even with the same props …God… all a little weird.

Really, and this I swear, I do not think it’s bad that we have reference to other colleagues of trade, I can even see it as a nice tribute …but sometimes I get a bit of embarrassment from others …no need!

We Want More of Joan Crisol & Alex Bueno - Exclusive InterviewIf precisely I am the photographer from Madrid who shares the most with his colleagues: they write to me and they ask me and I tell them everything, I do not have any kind of secret.

Actually I think the only thing that makes us different is our eye, everything else you find in studios; lights, touch-ups, plugins, etc.

Many say that with the smart phones in the future, many works will disappear, you think that the photography disappears in the future?

The truth is that I have more work than ever. Fifteen years ago I lived for Zero Magazine, and disappeared.

Then came Playboy, FHM, Interviu, etc… and they all closed. Now they are brands of underwear and tomorrow God will say.

“I do not think we should be afraid of changes, tomorrow will be totally different, but that even motivates me.”

You have filmed videos,  how has been your experience?

Videos at the time I did a lot because I was director of photography of video clips of Undergrounds groups from the scene in Madrid.

It was a very fun time, we did crazy things without money …But the production company I worked for closed and since then I have not done anything again.

Just one day I encourage myself and come back.

  1. This man is so handsome and his body is incredible.
I wonder why some men spend hours in the gym building up such masculine beauty, and then mar themselves with tattoos. It is a bit like painting graffiti on the Mona Lisa or Michelangelo’s David.
