Fengchen Wang is a Chinese-born, London-based menswear designer at the forefront of a new generation of fashion talent emerging from China. Wang studied MA Fashion Menswear at the prestigious Royal College of Art, London, graduating in 2015. Describing her aesthetic as “bold, futuristic and structured”, she focusses on technical outerwear, creating unisex clothing that is functional but at the same time conceptual and personal, drawing on her life experiences.

Nominated for the 2016 LVMH Prize, Wang has designed five collections to date, showing two at London Fashion Week Men’s as part of Lulu Kennedy’s support scheme for emerging designers, MAN. Additionally, she has collaborated with brands such as Levi’s and Converse, bringing her unique and artistic sensibility to those projects.

The colours of the collection take inspiration from the dawn she witnessed in the Wuyi Mountains: darker, cooler shades such as icy greys and blues give way to brighter, warmer hues such as fiery reds. Meanwhile, the feeling of the dawn is expressed through various graphic patterns.

Wang has been featured in publications such as Vogue, Vogue Runway, GQ, The New York Times, The Business of Fashion, Women’s Wear Daily, Dazed, i-D, Arena Homme+, 10 Men, Hypebeast, Highsnobiety and more. She is stocked at Dover Street Market, H Lorenzo, Harvey Nichols, Lane Crawford and SSENSE.

AW20 Collection, ‘Hope of Dawn’ was inspired by a recent trip Feng made to the Wuyi Mountains, in northern Fujian province, China, close to her hometown.

Ascending the mountain while it was still dark, she reached the summit before dawn and waited for the sun to rise over her surroundings. This felt like a metaphor for her life since starting her brand: working, waiting and hoping for dawn.

It’s the idea of waiting and hoping for dawn – especially in the hard times – that forms the foundation of the collection. This season, Feng Chen Wang reminds us not to give up and encourages us to keep on climbing, step by step.
