90’s Fashion Is Hotter Than Ever, And The Key Is In It’s Simplicity

The year may be 2022, but it’s the 1990s that dominates when it comes to fashion. The often ill-fitting and overly relaxed styles of the era have made a resurgence and, as GQ Magazine highlights, it’s all in the simplicity. Iconic outfits of the era count Keanu Reeves’ 1994 black suit, Al Pacino’s pinstripe-and-tshirt, and Tom Cruise’ oversized blazer combo as among their greatest alumni. Seizing on that in the modern day and creating an outfit that would have truly fit in the era, then, is a matter of keeping it cool.

Harnessing bright colors

A perusal over what makes the 90s vibe shows a few key trends. Bright colors are in; often quite blunt, and certainly not pastel. Clothes are baggiers, rather than form-fitting, and sometimes show a bit of skin – who can forget crop tops, or tank tops? Finally, there’s a freedom to the designs – those wearing them are first and foremost comfortable. The fashion of the day is often reflected in the catwalk, and the popularity of 90s styles is very clearly shown through that medium. In a roundup of fashion shows so far in 2022, Vogue has profiled the emergence of exciting, daring fashion choices from men across the fashion world. Sometimes, that can be as simple as wearing something that’s comfortable in the home rather than, typically, on the street, and hugely bright colors are a bit part of that.

Embracing the casual suit

A key aspect of 90s fashion, according to 90sFashion.com, is the relaxed suit. Pairing blazers and pants that potentially mismatch, and certainly aren’t of the tailored fit, is the idea – and then, for the undershirt, wearing a simple tee. This very casual look is reminiscent of film stars of the time, and was a much more enjoyable way to dress up formally than the tight rigors of a full three-piece suit and button down shirt – something made popular in recent years by period dramas.

Looking at double denim

One of the most iconic fashion trends of the 90s was double denim. Of course, double denim has been a thing for much longer than just the 30-odd year since the dawn of the 90s; manual workers and farmers in particular have relied on it for a long, long time. However, it wasn’t until the 90s that it became a real fashion option. It’s making a comeback today, and can even sometimes expand into the hallowed triple denim. The contrast of three denim pieces is in itself a style choice, and something that can be as ostentatious as bright colors and over-the-top accessories – making it a fine choice to bring the retro in.

Men using 90s fashion trends, from dad sneakers, to denim, to oversized suits, will be right on the money with modern fashion trends. 2022 has been a year in which the joyful casual nature of the 90s has been fully embraced.
