Country music sensation Orville Peck graces the cover of Paper Magazine in a captivating shoot by photographer Brett Loudermilk. The South African-born artist, known for his iconic fringed masks and enchanting vocals, continues to challenge the norms of the genre as the first openly gay country star signed to a major label.

Peck’s evolution from performing in dive bars to commanding massive stages has been marked by a gradual unveiling of his identity, both in his music and his public persona. In his interview with fellow boundary-breaking artist Gottmik, Peck reflects on this process, stating, “It’s sort of a parallel with my songwriting and with just who I want to be as an artist and a person. Which is to always be more vulnerable. So it’s kind of just an evolution.”

The journey has had its challenges, with Peck canceling a tour last summer to prioritize his health. However, a collaboration with country legend Willie Nelson on a controversial gay cowboy anthem reignited his passion for music.

This creative spark led to the development of Peck’s duets album, “Stampede,” featuring iconic artists such as Kylie Minogue, Elton John, and Noah Cyrus.

Peck’s determination to break free from the constraints of a genre traditionally dominated by straight white men is evident in his drive to prove naysayers wrong. He asserts, “There’s nothing wrong with being a straight white man in country music. But like, babe, we’ve heard it.” His commitment to inclusivity and authenticity has made him a trailblazer in the industry and an inspiration for aspiring artists who don’t fit the traditional country music mold.

As Orville Peck continues to redefine the boundaries of country music and inspire a new generation of diverse artists, fans eagerly await the release of “Stampede” Volume 2 and the reveal of more groundbreaking collaborations. With his unwavering dedication to vulnerability, inclusivity, and creativity, there’s no doubt that Peck’s star will continue to rise, leaving an indelible mark on the genre for years to come.
