Tom Hopper’s portrayal of Luther in The Umbrella Academy has undergone significant changes in the new season, particularly because of the character’s evolving relationship with his own body and identity. In the interview with Fault Magazine, Hopper reveals how Luther’s journey has shifted dramatically in Season 4. Unlike previous seasons, where Luther was defined by his superhuman strength and trauma, this season finds him stripped of his powers, which leads to a crisis of purpose and identity.
Hopper notes that his approach to the character hasn’t changed drastically, as he always lets the script guide him. However, Luther’s transformation from a superpowered individual to a powerless male stripper in Season 4 brings new challenges. Hopper reflects on how Luther, no longer encumbered by his powers or body, has to redefine his purpose. His portrayal shifts toward vulnerability as Luther grapples with his new reality, particularly his discomfort with his body—something Hopper physically felt when wearing the bodysuit in earlier seasons.
Interestingly, Hopper shares that the suit, despite its discomfort, helped him tap into Luther’s awkwardness and emotional depth. Its restrictions, such as difficulty fitting through doors, added layers to Luther’s character by forcing Hopper to embrace the physicality and awkwardness, which ultimately enhanced Luther’s vulnerability and humor.
This season’s focus on Luther’s loss of powers brings a fresh dynamic to the character, allowing Hopper to explore aspects of Luther that had previously been overshadowed by his superhuman identity.
