Dsquared2 Mens Spring/Summer 2015 Milan

Under the lofty glass ceiling inside a New York studio, the artist is fervently working on his next piece, surrounded by a group of hangers on and assistants, hoping to absorb some of his genius. Ideas ricochet from easel to silkscreen to the walls and onto his clothes. Independent, statement making, he wears his art on his sleeve.

Pop art, and its major figures that played and created in its experimental and colorful world from the 60s to the 80s influences the Dsquared2 men’s spring summer 2015 collection.

Referential mash-ups of iconic prints, sketches and graffiti inspired by contemporary American artists punctuate a boxy silhouette. Patent leather cats are appliqued onto roomy sweatshirts, a monkey is vividly printed on T-shirts and a denim jacket. A devious little monster lurks throughout the looks, embroidered all over cropped jackets, shirts and pants. The eye-catching motifs are endearing additions to the crisply cut separates.

Sportswear from the 80s is reimagined with tactile fabrications, giving this cool character a suave walk. A white striped black loose-legged tracksuit is in supple lustrous leather. Springy white terry toweling is used in shorts and hoodies. Papery nylon, printed with fluorescent camouflage is constructed into lightweight parkas and shorts. Jersey bonded leather, with a spongy, scuba-like hand, amp up coat volumes. Like graphic lines on a silkscreen print, red and blue thermo tape is applied to outline seams and pockets on a trench, pants and shirting. Soft drop crotch jeans, have worn-in knees from the artist at work, and are patched with faded denim polka dots.

Bold details are quirky declarations from an eclectic mind. White elasticated waist shirts have a cluster of badges on the chest or inserts of fluoro nylon. Chunky serrated tread elevates traditional baseball sneakers and neon soled sandals. Thick-rimmed eyeglasses and mirrored sunglasses shade his eyes. Accessories are oversized to hold his tools and his work. A large holdall “Twin zip bag” is constructed with two front pockets. A nylon backpack features multiple pockets. And for the artist traveling the world for a new vision, there’s brightly colored soft wheeling luggage.
