Start your morning on Instagram with visual advice on What to Wear Today. But we want to go deeper. Give you the nuts and bolts of how to get the look into your wardrobe. Today we’re talking about how to dress for a causal summer day and look as cool as Derrick Rose does here.
Memorial Day weekend is right around the corner and with it comes what is known to gym-rats and teenage girls as tank-top weather. But there is a right and wrong way to wear the summer staple when you’re a guy—that is, if you care about not looking like a third-grader.
For one, the tank top should be slim-cut, but not skin-tight, and the arm holes should hug, but not suffocate, your shoulders. If you have some kind of nautical tattoo on your ribcage, no one should be able to see it—save that business for the pool. In terms of color and pattern, use the same judgment you’d use with a T-shirt. Neutral colors and stripes are a classic move, but a tasteful print or graphic motif can work on the right guy, in the right context, too.
And speaking of context, that’s the last, but perhaps most important, consideration: Don’t wear a tank top anywhere but extremely casual, water-adjacent places. Places where people are drinking beer and getting sunburned. Places where dogs and children are welcome.
