5 Reasons Why You Should Wear Proper Gear Before Skiing

Have you ever been skiing? If not, you seriously need to get to the slopes. It may look intimidating, but it’s one of the most satisfying and deceptively difficult activities to take on. If you’ve been to the slopes, you know what it’s all about. The one thing that people tend to overlook while skiing is the proper protective gear. Reasons for not being meticulous about safety gear range from it fogging up the goggles, to limiting certain directional movements. The fact of the matter is that skiing isn’t a hobby to be taken lightly. No matter what, you should always protect yourself. Here are 5 reasons why you should wear proper protective gear while skiing.

1. It Sets A Good Example

It might feel clunky if you’re not used to it, especially if you’re a guy. It’s patently uncomfortable. But when we’re throwing on the gear, whether it’s men’s thermal underwear or a proper helmet, you’re showing the new and inexperienced how to properly go about the slopes. Sports like skiing are ripe with individuals that are hungry to show their skills. Some cuts corners on safety. We’ve all seen it. Don’t be that person. Set a good example.

2. It Prevents Complacency

It’s fun, it’s great for people of all ages, but it’s also very easy to get lulled into a false sense of security on the bunny slopes. Sure, we may be taking a friend up and teaching them the ropes. We may be experiencing and decide to avoid the lines of some of the more intermediate lifts. What ends up happening though, is we get cocky. We’ve all been there. Bunny slopes are easy, they’re short, and they’re a breeding ground for injuries we didn’t expect. Do not be complacent. Wear protective gear.

3. The Right Fit Keeps Your Head In The Game

“Proper” doesn’t just mean you’re wearing the right kind of gear. It means you’re wearing the ones that fit. Ill-fitting gear can be a big problem, especially if you’re just starting out. Outside of renting, finding the right fit allows the most mobility and comfort while on the slopes. Anything less and you’ll just be focused on how weird everything feels.

4. Reliable Brands Last Longer

The right gear isn’t cheap and the cheap gear isn’t right. Even if you’re a beginner, it’s a very good idea to invest a little more on reliable, proper gear. It’s going to set you back about 5-10% more than if you pieced together an estimation. Experts in the field all agree: it is worth it. Longevity is big when it comes to ski gear. You don’t want to have to pay double because the first set ripped for you.

5. You Can’t Predict the Weather

It could be a clear day out, or you can find yourself in the middle of a blizzard. When it comes to the snow seasons, much like the rain, you cannot tell. You don’t want to be caught in the middle of some wild conditions midday and unprepared.

Skiing is as addictive as it is fun. If you have the luxury of being in a ski spot year-round, then you absolutely have to keep the proper gear on hand. Even if you go seasonally, the amount of value you can extract from a proper purchase is, in the end, priceless. Stay safe. Stay warm. Enjoy the slopes!
