Kim Jones, creative director for Dior Men, unveiled an enchanting tribute to South African master potter Hylton Nel with the Spring 2025 menswear collection. Staged among gigantic cat sculptures, the showcase was a whimsical celebration of artistic expression, capturing the attention of celebrities such as Bad Bunny, Robert Pattinson, and members of the K-pop band Tomorrow x Together who graced the front row.

In anticipation of the upcoming Olympics, Jones opted for a more intimate approach instead of an athletic statement. This choice highlighted his personal connection with Nel, whose creations have been in Jones’ private collection for years. Nel’s pottery, known for its fusion of whimsical elements and personal narratives, served as a focal point for the show.

Jones transformed Nel’s designs into wearable art, as evidenced in the intricate detailing throughout the collection. Silver studs fashioned into naïve bird motifs adorned a high-collared black suit, while knitwear showcased playful patterns and slogans. The craftsmanship reached its pinnacle with a blue-and-white jacket covered in floral embroidery, mirroring the surface of earthenware. The piece took nearly 2,000 hours to complete.

Nel’s signature cat sculptures were enlarged and displayed alongside the models. The opening look featured a striking hybrid creature with a feline head and a female human body, reminiscent of ancient Egyptian deities. Some models accessorized with ceramic scarf-like sculptures around their necks, while others donned cloche hats handmade by South African craftspeople and designed by Stephen Jones. The charming cat pendants dangling from miniature Saddle bags paid homage to the South African brand Earth Age, highlighting Jones’ dedication to global artistry.

The collection’s color palette and textile selection reflected a deep connection with the African landscape. Explorer jackets, extra-wide shorts, and clog-inspired shoes evoked an adventurous spirit, while draped pants and a dramatic cape coat drew inspiration from a 1952 Christian Dior women’s design.

In his 60th collection for Dior in six years, Jones demonstrated his commitment to inspiring customers with fresh creativity. By showcasing Hylton Nel’s distinctive artistry, Jones presented a collection that captured the attention of fellow collectors and connoisseurs. As Nel’s work gains broader recognition, the artist maintains a humble perspective, finding joy in the unexpected opportunities that arise.
