There are few names more deeply connected to American menswear than Brooks Brothers. For Spring 2027, the historic New York house returned to the fashion-week spotlight under creative director Michael Bastian with a collection that demonstrated exactly why classic American style still matters.
Rather than radically dismantling the Brooks Brothers vocabulary, Bastian did something more interesting: he loosened it up.
Spring 2027 takes the familiar foundations of the house—tailoring, Oxford shirts, rugby tops, knitwear, loafers, madras and preppy sportswear—and lets them live with considerably more personality.

Michael Bastian Returns to NYFW
The presentation was significant beyond the clothes themselves.
Michael Bastian had been absent from New York Fashion Week with his namesake menswear collection for roughly a decade, while Brooks Brothers had similarly spent years away from the NYFW spotlight.
Their return together feels appropriate.
Bastian has always understood the particular language of American menswear: clothes that can be sophisticated without becoming precious, masculine without looking rigid, and traditional without necessarily feeling old.
For Spring 2027, that philosophy found an ideal home at Brooks Brothers.

Monaco Meets American Prep
The collection looked toward Monaco in the early 1980s, imagining a moment when Riviera glamour, American prep and pop culture could collide.
That inspiration immediately changed the temperature of Brooks Brothers.
Instead of strictly corporate tailoring, there were relaxed proportions, summer whites, soft colors, shorts, knitwear and sportswear layered with the house’s more recognizable tailored pieces.
One of the strongest opening statements paired a textured white cotton sweater with white shorts and a flash of baby blue underneath. It was uncomplicated but exceptionally effective: the kind of luxurious summer dressing that could belong in Monaco, Martha’s Vineyard or Fire Island.
Then came the tailoring.
A brown double-breasted suit with peak lapels and softened shoulders demonstrated where Bastian is taking the Brooks Brothers man. The structure remains, but the stiffness is disappearing.
This is tailoring designed to be lived in.

The New Brooks Brothers Man
That may be the most interesting part of Spring 2027.
The Brooks Brothers man doesn’t suddenly need to abandon his blazer, button-down shirt or loafers to appear contemporary. Instead, Bastian proposes that he reconsider how he combines them.
Rugby shirts were layered with broadcloth shirting. Pastels and sorbet shades softened traditional prep. Blazers appeared alongside more casual pieces. Generously proportioned trousers gave tailoring greater movement, while brightly colored anoraks introduced an almost youthful energy toward the end of the collection.

Madras—one of the great signatures of American summer style and a recurring element throughout Bastian’s own career—also appeared prominently, including patchworked combinations of blue and cream.
The result felt unmistakably Brooks Brothers without looking like a reproduction of its past.
Classic Doesn’t Have to Mean Conservative
Menswear has spent several seasons reconsidering what men actually want from tailoring.
The answer increasingly seems to lie somewhere between formality and ease.
Spring 2027 understands that shift.
A man may still want a beautiful double-breasted jacket, but perhaps with softer shoulders. He may love an Oxford shirt but wear it beneath a rugby shirt. He may appreciate traditional loafers while pairing them with shorts rather than trousers.
That’s where Brooks Brothers suddenly becomes interesting again.

Instead of chasing youth through streetwear or abandoning its heritage to manufacture novelty, the brand is using its own archive of American staples as building blocks.
The classics remain. The styling changes.
More Color, More Personality
Color played an important role in making that philosophy visible.
Baby blue, cream, brown and white established the sophisticated Riviera foundation, while brighter pastels, madras combinations and colorful outerwear brought the collection into a much livelier territory.
There was also a certain confidence in seeing traditional menswear pieces stacked together without worrying about whether everything matched perfectly.
A sweater, blazer, polo and anorak can coexist.
That slightly eccentric approach to layering makes the collection feel personal rather than prescribed.
And perhaps that is precisely what American prep needs right now.
Fashionably Male Take
Brooks Brothers Spring 2027 succeeds because Michael Bastian doesn’t appear embarrassed by the word classic.
Instead, he makes a convincing argument for it.

At a moment when menswear can become obsessed with reinvention, there is something refreshing about seeing a designer work with garments men already understand—the blazer, the sweater, the rugby shirt, the Oxford, the double-breasted suit—and demonstrate how much life remains inside them.
The masculinity here is polished but relaxed. Wealthy-looking without becoming ostentatious. Preppy without feeling like costume.
Most importantly, these are clothes that make you imagine the men wearing them beyond the presentation.
For a 208-year-old American institution, that might be the best kind of modernization possible.
Brooks Brothers isn’t trying to become something else for Spring 2027.
It’s simply remembering how good Brooks Brothers can look.
