Siki Im Fall/Winter 2014 NYC

By Jenni Avins Backstage before his show, Siki Im seemed sheepish to say his collection drew from the 1970s. “Not my favorite, really, but that’s why I thought I should explore it,” laughed the designer, grabbing a pair of wool felt trousers. “Boot leg!” he said. “I never had one in my life. It was a huge stretch for me.” Aside from the boot legs and a few butterfly collars, Im’s take on the decade was more avant-garde, less disco. That wool felt was an homage to German artist Joseph Beuys, who famously worked with the material. Im’s version, also in charcoal, included … Continue reading Siki Im Fall/Winter 2014 NYC

Lanvin Fall/Winter 2014 Paris

By Tim Blanks Alber Elbaz and Lucas Ossendrijver start each season for Lanvin with a word. “Our new word came to us without looking,” said Elbaz after the Fall presentation this morning: “digital.” Elbaz doesn’t even own a computer, but he is fascinated by the questions raised by the social media community. “Do we lose our identity in that community?” There may have been an answer in the graphics that closed the show today: giant, blank faces, a little like African masks. “Identities erased,” Elbaz said. There was something downbeat about such a notion, and the models, with their Berlin side-shaves and po-faced … Continue reading Lanvin Fall/Winter 2014 Paris

Sacai Fall/Winter 2014 Paris

The tide has turned. Once upon a time, Sacai‘s menswear hung on rails in a showroom without much company in the way of visitors. Today’s live presentation didn’t just seem packed because each of the twenty-six models stood facing a mirror, essentially doubling the body count as well as cleverly offering 360-degree views of a collection that often looks different from every angle. It seemed packed because clustered around every model were a handful of editors chanting I want that, … Continue reading Sacai Fall/Winter 2014 Paris

Carven Spring/Summer 2014

Carven creative director Guillaume Henry made no waste of time with his sophomore efforts for the French label. Looking to early French artists for the inspiration of his spring/summer 2014 collection, Henry whipped up a warm color palette of pastels and neutrals for his quaint dandy. Wearing fashioned bucket hats and socks with sandals, a charming figure was quick to emerge. Wearing slender trousers or loose-cut shorts with tops and outerwear that were more relaxed, Carven’s man had a solid silhouette for the season. From waffle check suits and long double-breasted coats to cropped lightweight jackets, the options were plentiful and the colors … Continue reading Carven Spring/Summer 2014
