The Contortionist: Anatol Modzelewski by Greg Mikrut for GQ Portugal

Here’s a very inspired fashion editorial with model Anatol Modzelewski by Greg Mikrut for GQ Portugal.

The Contortionist in Portuguese is ‘O Contorcionista‘ a fashion editorial starring model Anatol Modzelewski photographed by Greg Mikrut and styling by Serafin Zieliński.

The work is inspired by Egon Scheile.

Scheile was a major figurative painter of the early 20th century. His work is noted for its intensity and its raw sexuality, and the many self-portraits the artist produced, including nude self-portraits. The twisted body shapes and the expressive line that characterize Schiele’s paintings and drawings mark the artist as an early exponent of Expressionism.

“This is a trip to the artistic imagination of the Austrian expressionist painter Egon Schiele. The contorted bodies and the expressive line that characterize his works were transferred to this Fashion editorial through the lens of photographer Greg Mikrut, exhibiting an extraordinary beauty.”

Photographer Greg explains via instagram, “The photoshoot is a trip into Egons Schiele art world. Part of his works show portraits of men with unconventional beauty which are easy translatable into modern fashion. The works allow imperfections which is impression of Egons identity and proof of his experiences and sensitivity.”

“Editorial consists of photos which are my interpretation of Schieles sketches as well as the ones I mapped. The mood of his creation was done by color on every stage of production and by highlighting some details like white nails, dressing plasters on fingers or filth on his body.”

About Egon’s work

Some critics such as Jane Kallir have commented upon Schiele’s work as being grotesque, erotic, pornographic, or disturbing, focusing on sex, death, and discovery. He focused on portraits of others as well as himself. In his later years, while he still worked often with nudes, they were done in a more realist fashion.
