Glenn Martens translated concepts paraded at the Diesel show in February into a simplified, more accessible language.

Glenn Martens’ translated concepts took center stage at the Diesel Resort Collection 2024 in Milan, showcasing a unique blend of contemporary and vintage aesthetics. The collection drew inspiration from a variety of sources, resulting in a style that reads as very Demna/Vetements and Phillip Plein, with a touch of Matthew Williams’ Alyx.

One interesting aspect of the collection is how it manages to be both very Y2K in appearance while also not fitting the Y2K aesthetic at all. This is similar to the approach taken by Blumarine, which combines elements of the past with modern influences to create something entirely new.

The collection is reminiscent of old Dreamcast and PS1 game covers, with bold colors, geometric shapes, and futuristic designs. This is perhaps most evident in the men’s pieces, which are particularly striking.

Despite the retro influences, the collection still manages to feel contemporary and fresh. This is due in large part to Martens’ skill in reinterpreting classic designs in new and exciting ways. The collection also features a number of unexpected details, such as oversized zippers and off-kilter stitching, which add an element of playfulness and whimsy.

The menswear is Diet-Demna, but the womenswear saves it tremendously (to the point that I’m surprised that Demna hadn’t gone down this route with his women’s collections).

One of the standout pieces from the collection is a denim jacket with a bright orange lining, adorned with patches and bold lettering. This piece perfectly encapsulates the collection’s mix of classic and modern influences, and is sure to be a hit with fashion-forward consumers.

”Glenn does way more interesting stuff at Y/Project. Working for a denim/streetwear brand doesn’t really do him and the scope of his skills justice like his Gaultier collection did.”

Overall, the Diesel Resort Collection 2024 showcases Glenn Martens’ talent for combining disparate influences into a cohesive and visually striking whole. By blending classic designs with futuristic elements, Martens has created a collection that is both nostalgic and forward-thinking, and sure to appeal to a wide range of consumers. With its bold colors, unexpected details, and playful spirit, this collection is a must-see for anyone interested in cutting-edge fashion.
