Winter Outfit Ideas

With summer long-gone and autumn underway, it’s time to check out your wardrobe for suitable clothing for winter. We all know how quickly the cold days and nights come about – indeed, it often seems that one day it is warm and then, all of a sudden, that’s winter at the door – so it might be the time to have a look at what you have already, and what you need for the very best in winter style.

It can be difficult to look good in winter – especially in the very cold spells where keeping the cold away is your prime concern – but there are ways to look the part, even when it’s freezing outside. We took a look at some ideas for winter outfits that not only keep you warm, but also set the standard where fashion is concerned, so read on for some great ideas.

Coats and Jackets

The essential part of any winter wardrobe is your coats and jackets collection. Every man should have at least one long coat (like these), a heavy one for the coldest days, that is suitable for both formal and informal situations. What would we recommend? The in look these days is tweed, and a tweed overcoat can be a very stylish and elegant coat indeed.

Alternatively, you could take a look at long leather coats. These will be more expensive than the tweed option, but they do look great in the right combination. If you prefer, what about a shorter, biker-type leather jacket? Warm, comfortable and never out of fashion, they look great with smart-casual outfits.

Jumpers and Tops

When winter comes in, out come the woollens, and there is nothing more appropriate for cold winter nights than quality knitwear. A beautifully made woollen jumper is a perfect choice to pair with your favourite pair of jeans, and looks the part in the home, at the office or for a night out. If it’s not so cold, what about a sweatshirt, or perhaps a lighter sweater if you are not too concerned about the cold?

Very much in-vogue right now is the hoodie. There are some very attractive options when it comes to hoodies, with quality brands getting in on the act, and the street look is one that is cool right now. Wear a hoodie with a pair of jeans or chinos and casual shoes when the weather permits, and you can do without a coat with a sweater underneath it – this look will never tire.

Trousers, Jeans and Suits

There’s something about a good pair of jeans that makes them special. You likely have a favourite pair, and they look great with pretty much anything. Chinos are also a stylish addition to an outfit for winter, paired with a woollen jumper or sweater or even a hoody, but the style we like best is the current trend for tweed suits.

A two-piece tweed suit will look great on any occasion, and a three-piece perfect for formal events. Choose from a wide variety of patterns and colours, and you will be the trend-setter of the moment. Tweed can also be considerably warmer than a cotton suit, so makes a great choice for the winter months, and rest assured you can buy very nice tweed suits at surprisingly affordable prices.

Footwear and Headgear

Two of the most important parts of the winter outfit are a good pair of boots – essential for when there is snow on the ground or a lot of standing water – and a hat. We lose most of the body’s heat through the head, and a hat provides insulation.

For boots, we would always go with a sturdy leather pair, treated as necessary and providing excellent comfort and protection. You can’t go wrong with a pair of Dr Martens, the perennial style icon! For a hat, the choice is yours, but if you are going down the tweed suit road, have a look at matching flat caps, Peaky Blinders style!

Iconic workwear brand Cat Footwear has teamed up with LCM favourite Christopher Shannon for a third season, to present a collection of five industrial inspired styles, reworked and modernised for 2016. The original silhouette was designed in 2000 by Cat Footwear for the rigours of tough working environments, and has since been in their collection for more than fifteen years. Shannon has reconstructed the shape with a twist adding athletic inspired fluoro accents, reflective piping and a futuristic use of leather and suede fabrics to support his full look for SS16.
