Andrew Coimbra Spring/Summer 2017 shot by Karl Simone

Inspired by the designer’s own experience as the son of immigrant parents, S/S 2017 is intended to be an exploration of maintaining identity while in new environments.

Using immigration as a vessel, the idea of “being Canadian” while simultaneously being able to identify with and maintain the cultural elements familiar to Andrew Coimbra’s heritage, has been a challenge, but is illustrated in Coimbra’s most recent line.

Much like the aesthetic of the Mediterranean, and Portuguese culture, the collection explores tension between minimalism and clean lines versus excessive, floral-like patterns. Coupled with the standardization and the feeling of humbled athleticism found in North American style, the tension finds layers within itself. Specifically, in the embroidered neoprene bomber jackets, denim baseball jersey and french terry sweatshirts with the use of Portuguese symbols like the rose, prevalent in traditional tapestry.

Shot in New York by the incredible Karl Simone, leading by model Ryan Hassaine from DNA Models.
