Can Tom Holland––aka your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man––convince movie audiences he’s a heroin-addicted bank robber? To his mum’s horror, the answer is yes.
Holland, British actos best known as Marvel’s friendluy neighborhood Spider-Man, the sweet-faced hero of the ver-expanding cinematic universe, was in character for Cherry, a forthcoming film in which he plays an Army medic who returns home from the Iraq war with undiagnosed PTSD, develops a heroin addiction, and starts robbing banks.
“It’s very hard to watch, because I’m like, ‘Dang, that’s my friend.’ It’s brutal. But he took on the challenge beautifully. Once people get to see this version of Tom, what’s next? Sky’s the limit.”Zendaya says she was “super impressed” by Tom Holland’s performance in #Cherry
After filming the scene that takes place in the jail, Holland was little woozy but still pleased with his performance, so he did what any young person might in a moment of pride: He sent the footage of himself writhing around in the cell to his mother.
“Biggest mistake ever”, he says now, grinning. “I was like, ‘This is how my day’s going,’ and she was furious with me.
The actor is remarkable in this performance, really shows a scarily deep talent. Ciara Bravo is tremendous as well. The Russo Brothers went for something powerful and unique, landed on something familiar yet visceral and tragic throughout.
Cherry is a heartbreaking, stylistic, sensory overload that I absolutely loved! Career best performance from Tom Holland that brought tears to my eyes and impressive new ground covered by the Russos.
